Self-Care Support

What is self-care?

The World Health Organisation defines self-care as “the ability of individuals, families and communities to promote health, prevent disease, maintain health, and to cope with illness and disability with or without the support of a healthcare provider”. Here at Ivybridge Pharmacy, it is our top priority to support you on your self-care journey. We are passionate about health, both physical and mental and are here to assist you at all times.

What are the benefits of self-care support?

Empowering our patients with the confidence and information they need on how to look after themselves is what we do best. We work to enable people to have greater control over their own health and that of their families.

Development of healthy behaviours – With our expert advice, healthy behaviours can be developed, helping to prevent illness in the long term and bringing about brighter futures for all.

No need to see the GP – In many cases people can take care of their own minor ailments, reducing the number of GP consultations and enabling GPs to focus on caring for higher-risk patients. This saves you time and the NHS valuable funding. Our team can also signpost you to a relevant healthcare provider if necessary

Reduced Stress – Getting the information and support you need can help reduce stress and the burden that it has on both your physical and mental health.

How you can care for yourself

Eat Well – eating a well-balanced and nutritious diet filled with whole grains, colourful vegetables, lean protein and healthy fats is essential.

Exercise – the daily recommended amount of exercise is 30 minutes. Getting a walk-in, going dancing or hitting the gym is a great way to stay fit and keep you happy.

Take Time Out – it’s important to take time out to recharge and reduce stress levels keeping your body and mind happy and healthy.

Step into Nature – getting your daily dose of fresh air and vitamin D has been found to boost your serotonin levels (the happy hormone).

Get Some Serious Sleep – it is recommended that adults get between 7 and 9 hours of sleep every night. Good sleep can help to lower your risk for serious health problems, like diabetes and heart disease.

Hydrate – Being well-hydrated also improves sleep quality, cognition, and mood. We recommend drinking 2 to 3 litres of water a day.
